What is a teaching assistant?

A teaching assistant supports the teacher in planning and presenting lessons, and helps students learn. Teacher assistants may work part-time or full-time.

Also, some teaching assistants work with students with disabilities, assisting special education teachers. In these cases, teacher assistants may need to provide basic care to students, too, such as help with personal hygiene.

Locations: Various Schools across West London area.

Pay Rate: £80-£110 per day.

Teaching assistant responsibilities include:
  • Helping teachers create lesson plans
  • Working with small groups of students to enhance the learning process
  • Making sure classrooms are safe and tidy
 
What’s involved

The roles and responsibilities of teaching assistants are varied and differ between schools. Your job can include:

  • getting the classroom ready for lessons
  • listening to children read, reading to them or telling them stories
  • helping children who need extra support to complete tasks
  • helping teachers to plan learning activities and complete records
  • supporting teachers in managing class behaviour
  • supervising group activities
  • looking after children who are upset or have had accidents
  • clearing away materials and equipment after lessons
  • helping with outings and sports events
  • taking part in training
  • carrying out administrative tasks
